Niello
Latin nigellus = black; technique for working or decorating silver. A substance known as niello – a molten mixture of copper, silver, lead and sulphur – is applied to the recessed areas of an engraved pattern. The object is then heated and the black niello bonds with the substrate. After the surface is polished, contrasting patterns and decorations emerge.
