A-jour setting
French for breakthrough, cut-out; meaning openwork setting. The openwork setting emerged around 1800 and refers to a jewellery setting that is open or perforated at the back, designed for transparent gemstones; this allows more light to enter, thereby maximising the brilliance of the gemstone in question (particularly diamonds).
