Rare historical Geneva miniature enamel brooch, in a 750 / 18 ct yellow gold frame (tested and guaranteed).
The cartouche-shaped brooch is mounted crosswise and presents a perfectly preserved enamel painting of Lake Geneva in the centre. The miniature landscape painting shows part of the lakeside promenade in the foreground and the medieval Chateau de Chillon - a moated castle on the eastern shore of the lake - in the centre. The view extends over green hills to the Dents du Midi mountain range, which completes the idyllic scenery in the background. Two sailing ships float in the blue waters of the lake.
The motif is covered with a transparent enamel glaze, which protects the painting and ensures a lasting lustre.
The scenery is framed by four leaf motifs decorated with green translucent enamel, which in turn are surrounded by softly curved decorative elements in gold. The back of the brooch is also covered with so-called counter enamel to prevent stress cracks on the front and to preserve the integrity of the landscape.
The piece of jewellery can be attached to clothing using a pin with a C-hook, which was typical of the period.
In the 1830s, the so-called Geneva enamel miniatures experienced a real heyday and usually depicted Swiss landscapes or the inhabitants of the region in local costume. The Swiss also developed the technique of colourless glazing described above, which was revolutionary for enamel painting at the time.
In the 19th century, Geneva enamel was a popular souvenir that was highly prized as a regional speciality and, due to its detailed, masterful execution, was as highly prized then as it is today.
The present brooch is in the tradition of Geneva enamel painting and was created around 1870. It is an exquisite collector's item that also scores points for its marvellous condition.
