Vintage necklaces: jewellery of the 20th century

Vintage Kette GoldOur vintage jewellery includes items that were produced from the 1950s onwards. The term "vintage" therefore covers all jewellery from the second half of the 20th century and roughly ends with the new millennium.

As life developed at a rapid pace after the Second World War due to technical and medical advances as well as social and political decisions, the jewellery of the time was also constantly subject to new styles, ideologies and trends. The appearance of vintage necklaces and the respective preferences of their wearers therefore sometimes changed drastically within a few years and what was still en vogue today was already passé the next year.

The emancipation of women and their changing role from the loving but unobtrusive housewife and mother to the self-confessed power woman who runs her own business was blatantly important for this development. Vintage necklaces have always served to express one's own personality and were a sign of financial prosperity, style and self-confidence.

Today, a vintage necklace is a wonderful accessory for reviving the style of times gone by and enhancing your own look in a very individual way. They go well with both stylish evening dresses and modern, everyday clothing.

1950s: elegant necklaces made from luxurious materials

Characterised by a new sense of luxury, vintage jewellery of the Fifties was often worn according to the motto more is more. Magnificent vintage necklaces made of yellow and white gold, diamonds, pearls or coral adorned the décolletés of the ladies. Cord necklaces with fringes and bows were part of the style and were complemented with foliage, garlands or bouquets of flowers. The strict black and white contrasts of the past faded into the background and were replaced by colourful gemstones.

Revolutionary designs of the sixties

The 1960s was a particularly interesting decade, characterised by a love of experimentation and a sense of upheaval. Unusual and extravagant jewellery designs were created during this period, inspired by modern contemporary art. Contrasts between reflective and matt surfaces and effects of light and shadow were often played with. Earrings, bracelets and rings were set with pearls and gemstones in all sizes and the vintage necklaces of the 60s also came up with bold designs that nestled around the wearer's neck in gold, silver and platinum.

1970s: A statement for every day

Statement necklaces from the 70s are still a real eye-catcher today thanks to their large, extravagant designs in silver and gold. Vintage necklaces from this decade were usually long and particularly popular in the form of necklaces with large gold or silver links. Incidentally, the Seventies were also a time for colour! Colourful gemstone necklaces were the perfect accessory for short mini dresses or deep V-necklines.

Bold and eye-catching: vintage necklaces from the 1980s

In the eighties, fashion became more than ever a form of individual expression. Vintage necklaces of the Eighties were therefore large, individual and eye-catching!

The jewellery of this decade was generally often presented in the form of rounded silhouettes and soft lines, which were combined with geometric, symmetrical motifs. The material of choice here was yellow gold.

The long chains and pendant necklaces of the 1970s were now replaced by short necklaces and chokers, usually without a central suspension.
