Spectacular design bangle ‘The Circular Bracelet’ by Fras van Nieuwenborg and Martijn Wegman, crafted from 925 silver (stamped, signed and guaranteed).
This extraordinary piece of designer jewellery is forged from a wide ring of sterling silver, which is put under tension until it springs into a three-dimensional shape of its own accord. This creates a hoop that appears to consist of moving, intertwined circles - like a spiral that can be pulled apart but always returns to its original shape.
The bangle, which bears the name ‘The Circular Bracelet’, was created by Dutch designer Frans van Nieuwenborg in collaboration with Martijn Wegman. After completing his studies, Van Nieuwenborg worked for several years in Denmark for various designers and architects. In 1973, he founded his own design office in Leiden, the Van Nieuwenborg Industrial Design Consultancy Group. His collaboration with Martijn Wegman, who worked with van Nieuwenborg from 1973-1990, resulted in the famous bangle, which is exhibited in several museums, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Hertogenbosch.
In his designs, van Nieuwenborg pushes the boundaries of what is possible and explores the possibilities of various techniques. He himself describes his work with the following statement:
"Design goes beyond creating. It's not just about ‘material’ design, but also about shaping emotions. Creating new connections, exploring and shifting boundaries. Not only organising existing knowledge, but also daring to fundamentally change it. Not moving within the familiar framework, but stepping out of it."
