Description
A particularly rare historical choker made from watch spindle clamps, crafted in four rows from 835 silver (assayed and guaranteed).
This exceptional choker comprises four rows of delicate silver pea chains, artfully interspersed with six historical fire-gilded spindle clamps. Originally, spindle clamps served as counterweights in German and English spindle pocket watches and simultaneously protected the delicate balance wheel. From the 17th to the 19th century, they were elaborately designed with engravings, ornamental decorations and relief-like openwork.
With technological progress, the spindle escapement increasingly lost its significance in the 19th century. From the second half of the century onwards, spindle watches were considered obsolete and were often dismantled, melted down or mechanically converted. This piece of jewellery illustrates in a unique way how individual spindle clamps, particularly in England, were reworked into decorative jewellery and have thus been preserved to this day.
The choker is fastened by a discreetly integrated clasp mechanism, stylishly adorned with a spindle clasp.
Made around 1890, this antique traditional costume necklace proves to be an elegant addition to dirndls and traditional costume.
