Description
Rare neo-Renaissance pendant of St George, decorated with ornamental enamel and crafted from silver (tested and guaranteed).
Hanging from a sturdy silver anchor chain is a sculpturally crafted pendant with the motif of St George in the well-known depiction on horseback fighting the dragon. An artistic overlay of decorative enamel gives the motif a special vibrancy and also captivates with its harmonious colour scheme in shades of blue and green. Two strands decorated with pearls, each extending from the horse's tail and head, lead into the enamelled pendant loop and prevent the pendant from turning when worn.
This historical piece of jewellery was created in Augsburg around 1880 and is made in the style of the depictions of St. George from the Renaissance period. During the Historicism period, Augsburg was a well-known and highly valued place for the production of Renaissance-style jewellery. Some of the pieces of jewellery from this provenance are so perfectly modelled on the Renaissance that in the 1960s and 1970s they were sometimes mistakenly traded as genuine Renaissance objects.
St George is one of the best-known and most popular depictions in Christianity. As one of the 14 holy helpers, he is widely venerated and is the patron saint of England and Georgia, numerous knightly orders and various craft guilds. His memory is still alive today, especially in rural regions: On St George's Day, priests traditionally bless the horses of horsemen and farmers. In Bavaria in particular, ceremonial horse rides have been preserved to honour this day in a special way.
