Rare antique drop earrings featuring lava cameos, crafted from gold-plated silver and tombac (assayed and guaranteed).

Each earring is set with an oval lava cameo depicting an antique-style portrait of a lady. The cameos are secured in sturdy bezel settings made of gold-plated tombac. The hook backs and clasps are made from gold-plated silver and have been carefully handcrafted in our workshop.

The carved lava stones appear in shades of black and beige, creating a particularly charming contrast on the ear.

These historic lava cameos were created around 1880 in Naples. In the 19th century, they were regarded as popular mementos of the so-called Grand Tour – those educational journeys to southern Italy that led in particular to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Such journeys were among the cultural highlights of their time and were often commemorated with special souvenirs such as these cameos.
