Description
A charming vintage medallion with polychrome enamel work, crafted from 585 / 14 carat yellow gold (hallmarked and guaranteed).
The front of the pendant is adorned with an intricately executed shepherd’s scene in enamel, also known as a ‘pastoral’ (from the Latin *pastor* = shepherd). This is a common motif in the visual arts, which enjoyed great popularity particularly during the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods. It often depicts lovers, courtiers or shepherds in an idyllic, idealised landscape, surrounded by grazing livestock. The aim of these works is to portray nature as a place of longing, capturing its lightness, beauty and tranquillity.
The scene depicted here shows a couple in a landscape abounding with flowers, surrounded by two sheep resting peacefully. Leaning towards her beloved, the lady’s gaze is directed to the left towards a rose that is being picked for her at that very moment.
The motif is modelled on the painting ‘The Shepherd and Shepherdess’ by François Boucher from 1760, which is why the couple are also depicted in contemporary Rococo attire.
The reverse of the medallion is finely guilloché and coated with a layer of orange-red translucent enamel. Inside, there are two frames for storing small mementos and photographs.
This particularly beautiful pendant was made around 1950. It exudes historic charm and can be wonderfully personalised with your own mementos inside!
Dimensions of the medallion (including eyelet): 3.3 x 2.5 cm.
Weight: 10.6 grams.
Condition: Very good condition, small chip in the enamel on the reverse, freshly cleaned, see photos.
You will receive the pendant lovingly packaged in one of our high-quality cases and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
