Unique antique mourning ring from the 18th century, crafted from 750 / 18 ct yellow gold (tested and guaranteed).
The narrow band ring is decorated with black enamel on the front and bears the following inscription: G:Ferguson.ob(iit): 21 June.1782.ae(tatis suae): 52. G. Ferguson died on June 21, 1782 at the age of 52. The ring thus served as a memento of the deceased and was part of a far-reaching culture of mourning, which was accompanied by special rituals and periods of mourning in the classical period, but also in the following eras.
This rare ring was created in England in 1782 and is a wonderful example of the culture of mourning at that time, which was not lived behind closed doors as it is today, but was worn out in the open for everyone to see.
