Description
English memorial or mourning ring with inscription, crafted from 750 / 18ct yellow gold (stamped and guaranteed).
The wide band ring is decorated with black enamel and inscriptions that wrap around the ring band like two ribbons. The ring reveals the following: "Edw(ar)d Rotherham died 21 Nov 1821 aged 26" and "John Rotherham died 10 Feb 1823 aged 65". This could have been a father and son who died just a few years after each other.
The rare ring is an example of the mourning culture of past centuries, which contrasts with our modern understanding of death and mourning. As early as the 16th century in England, a deceased loved one was immortalized in mourning and memorial jewelry and this tradition was continued in the coming centuries in the form of jewelry, rites and standards.
This extraordinary ring was created in England in1823 and is impressive both for its rarity and its exquisite condition.
Ring size: 58 / 18.5 mm (the ring cannot be resized).
Width of the ring band: 7.2 mm.
Weight: 3.7 grams.
Condition: Wonderful condition, freshly cleaned, see photos.
You will receive the ring lovingly packaged in one of our pretty cases and with a certificate of authenticity.
Please note: Vintage or antique pieces of jewelry are worn objects that may show slight signs of wear due to their history.
