An exceptional Late Rococo silhouette ring, crafted from seed pearls and 585 / 14-carat rose gold (hallmarked and guaranteed).
This large antique ring features a high-oval ring head, the centre of which is set with a miniature. Behind the glass, a portrait of a nobleman can be seen in profile, facing left. Depicted in the style typical of the period, with a jabot (ruffled collar) and a plait tied at the nape of the neck – a style that came into fashion in the mid-18th century in the form of wigs – the gentleman perfectly embodies the ideal of the time.
The gentleman’s silhouette is executed in black gouache on white paper and thus follows the tradition of silhouette portraits, which were in vogue in jewellery from 1770 onwards as an alternative to coloured portrait miniatures and were executed to an equally high standard.
Often set in austere round or oval frames, these silhouettes were usually adorned only discreetly with a wreath of pearls or small gemstones. The ring’s austere design already foreshadows Classicism, which shaped European art between 1770 and 1840.
The ring head is mounted on a solid band, which was replaced around 1890 and will therefore continue to ensure stability for years to come.
This magnificent ring was created around 1780 and is an authentic testament to a distinctive 18th-century fashion trend. A dream collector’s item for lovers of portrait jewellery!
