Rare historical micro mosaic pendant with chain, crafted from 585/14 carat yellow gold and gold-plated silver (tested and guaranteed).
The finely crafted Italian pendant is set with a beautiful micro mosaic of tiny glass stones. The main motif is a white dove in a corded frame, a symbol of peace. Stylised patterns of white, blue and red mosaic stones adorn the four sides of this unique pendant. Three shimmering seed pearls form a charming finish and blend harmoniously with the colour scheme of the piece.
The gold-plated silver pendant is connected to a simple anchor chain in 585/14K yellow gold (stamped and guaranteed) by a large, sweeping eyelet.
This extraordinary antique pendant was made in Italy around 1870 and is a beautiful testament to a technique that was already passé by the end of the 19th century.
Micro mosaics were popular souvenirs among the nobility and the wealthy upper classes who travelled through Italy on the so-called Grand Tour in the 19th century. Tiny coloured glass stones were arranged into motifs, primarily depicting ancient Roman ruins and sites, magnificent buildings, but also mythological or religious scenes, animals and flowers.
At the turn of the 20th century, other travel souvenirs, such as photographs, came into fashion and the elaborate technique of micro mosaics increasingly faded into the background.
