Rare necklace de Chien from the Belle Epoque period, crafted from fine oriental pearls, sapphires and delicately gold-plated 830 silver (stamped and guaranteed).
The necklace close to the neck consists of a total of 13 rows of tiny oriental pearls with a creamy white lustre, which are strung in a gentle gradient and thus fall in a garland shape. They end in seven openwork cartouches made of silver, which are composed of playful tendril ornaments and are each decorated with three cabochon-cut sapphires and two half pearls. The 21 fine blue sapphires have a total stone weight of approx. 2.3 carats and create an elegant colour accent.
The filigree necklace is closed at the nape of the neck with a classic clasp that is concealed in one of the cartouches.
The necklace's characteristic name comes from the way it is worn, as it fits close to the neck like a "dog collar". As such, it shaped the jewellery fashion of the Belle Epoque, in which pearl necklaces in different, graduated lengths were often combined with a Collier de Chien. This fashion was modelled in particular on Alexandra of Denmark, wife of the future King Edward VII of England.
The necklace was created around 1890 and reflects the characteristic jewellery fashion and taste of the late 19th century. It is a rare and sought-after collector's item and looks particularly good with elegant evening wear or as historical bridal jewellery.
The antique necklace has been cleaned and expertly restored by us by hand and the pearls newly strung on pearl silk.
