Description
Historic gem cameo brooch depicting Ceres, framed in 375/ 9ct gold (tested and guaranteed).
The English brooch is set with a finely cut, oval shell cameo showing the antique-style portrait of the goddess Ceres in profile to the right. The Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility is always depicted with her iconographic attributes such as fruit, a torch, a snake, a wreath of ears or a sheaf of ears. On this brooch, she wears a bouquet of ears of corn in her hair. The cameo is finely cut and impresses with the richness of detail in the depiction.
A pin with a safety catch is attached to the back of the classic, simple gold frame, which can be easily and securely attached to clothing.
This elegant brooch was made in England around 1890 and is a wonderful example of the reception of antiquity in the 19th century.
Dimensions of the brooch: 4.7 x 3.4 cm.
Dimensions of the cameo: ca. 4.5 x 3.1 cm.
Weight: 11.0 grams.
