Description
Pretty vintage diamond dormeuse earrings, crafted from 585/14-carat gold and silver (hallmarked, tested and guaranteed).
A delicate, double-layered square gold setting is mounted on sturdy, period-style gold clasp backs, set in the centre with a beautiful, sparkling Old European Cut diamond. At the top of each earring sits a small early octagonal-cut diamond, adding a lovely accent. All diamonds are set in silver settings typical of the period and have a combined carat weight of ca. 0.24 carats (J-K, SI2-P1).
The name of the earrings derives from the French verb ‘dormir’ (= to sleep): small earrings that sit close to the earlobe were designed to be worn even whilst sleeping. Particularly towards the end of the 19th century, people moved away from long, ostentatious earrings and began to favour more understated pieces such as dormeuse earrings.
These enchanting earrings were created in Vienna around 1900 and, thanks to their understated design, can be worn in a variety of ways.
Dimensions of the earrings (including the clasp): 1.1 x 0.6 cm.
Diameter of the Old European Cut diamonds: ca. 3.1 mm.
Diameter of the octagonal diamonds: ca. 1.4 mm.
Carat weight and quality of all diamonds: ca. 0.24 ct (J-K, SI2-P1).
