Description
Signed rare brooch from the Wiener Werkstätte, designed by Josef Hoffmann, crafted from enamelled brass (tested, marked WW on the reverse).
This extraordinary oval brooch is decorated with wonderful enamel work in blue, red and white and displays the typical design language of Viennese Art Nouveau. The contrasting colours and minimalist decoration reflect the development at that time away from floral Art Nouveau towards a geometric, abstract design style.
This rare piece of jewellery was designed by Joseph Hoffmann. It was crafted by Johann Souval, who worked for the Wiener Werkstätte.
The back of the brooch has a pin with a safety clasp, making it easy to attach to clothing.
The Wiener Werkstätte was founded in 1903 on the initiative of architect Josef Hoffmann (15 December 1870, Pirnitz – 7 May 1956, Vienna), painter and designer Koloman Moser (30 March 1868, Vienna – 18 October 1918 Vienna) and textile manufacturer and patron Fritz Waerndorfer (5 May 1868 Vienna – 9 August 1939 Bryn Mawr). The aim of the production community was – following the example of the English Arts & Crafts movement – to counteract industrial mass production and rigid historicism with contemporary, high-quality handcrafted products.
The jewellery from this era is not only popular with collectors, but also remains very contemporary today, thanks in particular to its unique designs.
Dimensions of the brooch: 4.3 x 2.3 cm.
Weight: 10.4 grams.
Condition: Very good historical condition, brooch fastening renewed on one side, freshly cleaned, see photos.
