Description
Historic bar brooch with brilliant Australian opals, crafted from 585/14 carat yellow gold (stamped and guaranteed).
This finely crafted brooch captivates with its understated design, which impressively showcases the wonderfully brilliant opals in a harmonious gradation of sizes. As is customary for opals, the stones are cut into smooth, oval cabochons, allowing their characteristic opalescence – here mainly in radiant shades of blue, green and occasional red – to stand out particularly beautifully. The sizes are arranged so that the largest opal forms the centre and the other stones gently decrease in size on either side. The 15 oval cabochon-cut opals have a total stone weight of ca. 2.9 carats.
The C-hook fastening on the back makes it easy to put on and take off this brooch, which was created around 1900.
Australian opals were a popular element in antique jewellery around 1900, especially in the Art Nouveau period, where their natural play of colours was considered ideal for organic, flowing designs. They were often used in rings, pendants and brooches and were intended to radiate elegance, mysticism and individuality.
Dimensions of the brooch: 6.0 x 0.6 cm.
Dimensions of the opals: ca. 6.16 - 3.48 mm x 4.4 - 2.9 mm, total ca. 2.9 ct.
Weight: 4.1 grams.
Condition: Very good condition, freshly cleaned, see photos.
The brooch comes lovingly packaged in one of our pretty cases and with a certificate of authenticity.
