Platinum

Platinum is a rare, silvery-white precious metal known for its density, corrosion resistance and durability. It has a long history dating back to ancient Egypt. However, platinum was not recognised as a precious metal in Europe until the 18th century, when it was discovered by Spanish conquistadors in South America. Before this time, those who appreciated jewellery made of light-coloured metal and could afford it wore silver jewellery.

In the 19th century, platinum jewellery experienced a boom, especially in the Victorian era, when the precious metal was considered a symbol of wealth and prestige. Platinum is ideal for making high-quality jewellery due to its density and strength. Platinum rings, for example, are a popular choice because they are extremely durable and therefore suitable for everyday wear.

Modern platinum jewellery is also hypoallergenic and therefore very suitable for people with sensitive skin.

White gold

White gold is an alloy consisting of yellow gold and one or more other metals to achieve a silver or ‘white’ colour. The most common metals used to make white gold are palladium, nickel and silver.

White gold jewellery became established around the turn of the 20th century, when demand for an adequate and high-quality alternative to yellow gold increased. The white metal became particularly popular in the 1920s, when Art Deco designs gained prominence in jewellery making.

Instead of platinum jewellery, people now preferred white gold bracelets or earrings and were enthusiastic about the radiance of the ‘new’ material. This is because white gold jewellery is often rhodium-plated to create a particularly shiny, reflective surface and to protect the material from scratches. Antique jewellery made of white gold thus combines timeless elegance and durability with fascinating stories from past eras.
