Antike Diamantringe

(until around 1950)

Antique diamond rings convey a piece of history like no other piece of jewellery, as the cut of a diamond tells you exactly in which era it was processed. In addition, an antique diamond ring always has a symbolic character, as it is often given as an engagement, wedding or friendship ring as a sign of infinity.

Did you know that pieces of jewellery in the art trade are considered antique if they are over 100 years old? You can find fine antique diamond rings from the 19th century to around 1920 in Halsbandaffaire's antique jewellery range. Find out more"

A brief history of the diamond cut

The earliest cut diamonds were made into jewellery in the form of octahedrons, the natural crystal structure of the diamond. The surfaces of these so-called pointed stones were initially only polished, and it was not until the 15th century that simple cut shapes came into fashion. The discovery of cleavage led to established variants such as the rose-cut in the following centuries.

Continuous refinements and new technical achievements made the so-called Old Mine Cut possible in the 18th century. In contrast to today's buying behaviour, the size of a diamond was the most important factor back then. Clarity and brilliance were of secondary importance. This only began to change in the 19th century with the development of the old european cut.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the brilliant cut conquered the world. To this day, it is characterised by at least 57 facets and ideal proportions in terms of brilliance and total reflection of the incident light.

Expert tip: Whether a diamond ring is antique or was only created in the later 20th century can be easily assessed with knowledge of the historical development of the cut.

A gift for eternity

The deeper meaning of the ring makes it an excellent gift. Whether as a sign of friendship, a lifelong connection within a marriage or as a promise of love for an engagement: an antique diamond ring is as individual and unique as the person who wears it.

With the development of synthetic diamonds since the 2000s, the choice of an antique diamond ring should also be considered. Because with antique pieces, you can always be sure that you are holding a natural, untreated diamond in your hands.
