Klassizismus Schmuck
(1780 - 1820)
From 1780 until around 1820, the formal language of Classicism prevailed, clearly contrasting with the courtly pomp of the preceding Rococo period. The style of Classicism is an expression of a new conception of society and emblematically represents the now predominant republican-democratic attitude; the decoration is now simpler and characterised by strict, straight lines and a preference for antique Roman-Greek ornamentation. The archaeological discovery of Pompeii in the Gulf of Naples reinforces the enthusiasm for antiquity. As a result, gems and cameos also became fashionable and were fashioned into wonderful pieces of jewellery.
The elegant marquise ring with its pointed oval shape, often set with diamonds and coloured gemstones, is also a typical piece of jewellery from this era. With the rise of Napoleon, the materials used in jewellery became more sophisticated again. Matching jewellery ensembles were worn as parures or demiparures, consisting of a necklace (now no longer worn so close to the neck), chandelier earrings, bracelets and brooches, completed by a tiara in the courtly circle.
