A brief history of antique cufflinks

Until the 17th century, the cuffs of men's shirts were decorated with lace and ribbons until these were replaced by silver and gold buttons. A small link chain connected the two buttons together and ensured that the cuff remained closed. Due to the precious material, cufflinks were initially reserved for the upper classes and therefore also functioned as a status symbol.

With the industrial revolution in the 19th century, cufflinks became affordable for the wider population and established themselves over the following decades as a valued men's accessory that is still popular today.

The right shirt for the button

Before you decide on antique cufflinks, you should first choose the right shirt. A classic sports cuff is not suitable for wearing cufflinks, as it is an already buttoned cuff without a turn-up. You therefore need a shirt with a so-called French cuff or double cuff.

Basic course on cufflinks

Cufflinks are loose buttons that are not sewn on and are used to fasten the cuff of a men's shirt. There are basically two types of cufflinks: those with two similar buttons that are connected by an eyelet or bar and those with a fixed, hinged toggle.

The following procedure has proven to be effective for attaching the buttons: The shirt is put on and the cuff is folded over once to create a double cuff. To attach the buttons, the four buttonholes of the cuff must lie directly on top of each other. The shirt and buttons fit correctly when the latter protrude a few centimetres below the sleeve of the jacket, creating a subtle accent.

You should always make sure that the buttons are not placed in front of the shirt, otherwise your hands will no longer fit through the sleeves.

The allure of antique cufflinks

Antique pieces of jewellery convey history and provide an insight into the world of past generations. This is also the case with antique cufflinks, as they are unique historical pieces that emphasise the individuality of the wearer. The designs of the early 20th century, for example, reflect the influences of various art movements or a preference for certain precious stones and metals. Instead of choosing off-the-peg pieces, it is therefore worth investing in high-quality, unique pieces that make a stylish statement, especially on formal occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or company celebrations. Antique gold cufflinks in a classic knot shape or with subtle diamond and mother-of-pearl inlays are particularly suitable here and act as a timeless accessory that can accompany you for decades.
