Art Déco Earrings

A new image of women

The image of women changed fundamentally during the Art Déco period and took a big step towards independence. At the time, the term ‘flapper’ referred to a broad class of young, self-confident women who took over jazz clubs with short hair and short skirts. The attitude and fashion of the early 20th century thus created the perfect conditions for elaborately crafted Art Déco jewellery.

No room for understatement

Art Déco earrings consisted of long pendants and formed cascades of stylised flowers or delicate geometric shapes, which were sometimes completely set with diamonds. Large, artfully cut gemstones such as coral or jade were set on slender clasps and surrounded by sparkling settings, creating glamorous, sculptural designs. Incidentally, the material colour of choice was white. Art Déco earrings in white gold and platinum were clearly favoured.

Finesse and versatility

Luxurious earrings continued to be popular in the 1930s, but their design now changed. Volutes, stylised foliage and shells formed the basis for drop-shaped or other geometric suspensions. The design of the earrings was now even reversed: large mountings, which often covered the entire earlobe, were now the starting point for narrower and shorter earrings.

The focus was also on multifunctionality: as with Art Déco necklaces, earrings were also sometimes made with refined mountings or detachable elements so that they could be combined to form an Art Déco brooch and worn on clothing, for example.
