Vintage earrings between virtue and rock 'n' roll

The 1950s were characterised by contrasts between a conservative generation of parents and the rebellious youth. Virtue and strict morals clashed with rock 'n' roll and rebellion. This conflict was also reflected in jewellery: colourful, opulent designs coexisted alongside classically understated pearl jewellery.

Generally speaking, however, the era of simple and austere designs was over and the focus was now on pompous and eye-catching designs with statement character! Colourful gemstones in combination with pearls, diamonds and gold were not uncommon and complemented the fashion of the Fifties in a glamorous way.

Mid-century earrings, especially clip earrings, could be larger. Short earrings or grape-shaped pendants in particular were favoured for daytime wear. In the evening, on the other hand, women adorned themselves with luxurious drop earrings made of white gold and diamonds.

Material experiments: vintage earrings as an unconventional accessory

Ten years later, individualism and emancipation had clearly prevailed and jewellery was based on daring materials and shapes. The swinging sixties produced earrings with unusual textures and a heterogeneous design language. People adorned themselves lavishly: vintage earrings in asymmetrical designs went hand in hand with futuristic clothing and abstract patterns.

Gold clip earrings were also popular in this decade and the preference for unusual textures and bold colours was clearly evident in the earrings of the time. In the second half of the 1960s, the hippie era became established and with it came large silver jewellery with turquoise, amber or malachite.

Vintage earrings in the last third of the 20th century

The tastes of the seventies were not characterised by a single trend, but by many different styles and materials that coexisted at the same time. Jewellery remained the same as it had been two decades earlier: traditional classics were produced as well as original models in daring designs. Unlike the earrings of the 60s with their edgy, fragmented shapes, rounded designs were now favoured, a trend that continued into the 1980s.

Vintage earrings from the 70s are therefore particularly versatile and can still be combined with a variety of different styles today. For example, opulent chandelier earrings can still be worn perfectly with trendy cocktail outfits in the 21st century!

From the 1980s onwards, the changing image of women meant that jewellery became a symbol of emancipation and at the same time had to fit into the everyday life of the modern business woman. Vintage earrings from this period are characterised by voluminous shapes in yellow gold and large, colourful gemstones. Discs and hemispheres made of gold were worn as well as pieces of jewellery with countless pavé-set gemstones.

The further we move into the new millennium, the more difficult it becomes to find a common denominator in fashion and jewellery design. The last years of the 20th century were characterised by a pluralism of styles, which - encouraged by the emergence of the internet and the increasingly rapid networking of each individual - led to rapidly changing trends.

What materials were vintage earrings made from?

Depending on the decade, different materials dominated earrings, studs and clip earrings. Coral, turquois, sapphire or ruby in combination with gold and silver were widespread.
