A brief history of engagement rings

The ring has always been regarded as a symbol of eternity and is still worn today not only for purely decorative purposes, but can also be a sign of an internal connection.

Historically, the engagement ring is said to go back to Pope Stephen I, who wanted to emphasise the promise of marriage and the commitment of marriage. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, iron engagement rings became established, which were - not very romantically - given to the future bride as proof that the dowry had been received.

In the 15th century, Maximilian I of Habsburg presented a diamond engagement ring for the first time.

Art Déco engagement rings
