Cufflinks are loose, unattached buttons used to fasten the double cuffs of a men's shirt. There are basically two types of cufflinks: those with two identical buttons connected by an eyelet strand or bar, and those with a button on the front and a foldable toggle on the back.

The history of the cufflink

The first cufflinks were often simple strings or ribbons that were pulled through the cuff. Over the centuries, these simple fastenings developed into artistic and elaborate designs, which were eventually made from precious materials such as gold, silver and gemstones.

In the 19th century , cufflinks experienced a real boom, especially in Victorian jewellery, when they became an essential part of formal menswear. They were valued not only as a practical accessory, but also as an expression of individuality and style. Many men also began to wear cufflinks as personal heirlooms or gifts, as they were often engraved with monograms or other designs. This allowed men to carry a piece of their personal family history with them in the form of jewellery.

Why you should still wear cufflinks today

Cufflinks can have a decisive influence on the overall impression of an outfit and are a wonderful form of jewellery to enhance a classic suit or shirt. They also offer the opportunity to express your individual style in a subtle and tasteful way. Instead of choosing off-the-peg items, it is worth investing in high-quality, unique pieces that make a stylish statement, especially on formal occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or company celebrations.

Furthermore, cufflinks offer a wonderful opportunity to be passed on to family and friends as a gift or heirloom. Even decades later, they can still symbolise special periods in life and make the past and memories tangible.
