Description
Unique antique ring from the 18th century, crafted from 14k yellow gold (tested and guaranteed).
The centre of this beautiful ring is set with a light blue, untreated sapphire in an antique cut (ca. 1 ct), flanked by two fine diamonds totalling ca. 0.2 carats (H-J, SI1-SI2). The diamonds are cut in the style of the time, a precursor of the later Old European cut.
The special feature of this piece of jewellery, however, is found on the outside of the ring band. This is designed as a scroll and reveals an inscription on a white enamel background: ‘Will Tarver May 1757 aet(tatis suae): 27’. The text refers to Will Tarver, who died in May 1757 at the age of 27.
The ring was thus worn as a memento mori and may have been worn by his wife. Jewellery of this kind represents a far-reaching mourning culture that was accompanied by special rituals and mourning periods in centuries past.
This rare ring was made in England in 1757. It is absolutely unique and part of a story that goes back almost 300 years and still touches us today.
