A brief history of opal

The history of opal dates back to ancient Rome, where the gemstone was referred to as „opalus“ and was said to have beneficial properties. It was also said to serve as a bringer of luck and was often worn as an amulet. The mineral also plays an important role in the culture of the Aborigines in Australia, one of the largest sources of opals, as it is seen as a symbol of creation and a connection to nature.

Opal and its properties

The best-known varieties of the gemstone are white and black opal and boulder opal. Its special features lie in its unique chemical structure, which has not been observed in any other mineral to date.

Opal consists of tiny, closely spaced cristobalite crystals that are embedded in silica gel, the building material of opal. This structure enables the fascinating play of colours (opalescence) on an otherwise milky-pale background: the incident light hits the silica gels, is diffracted and reflected and thus leads to the classic light effects in blue and green, but also yellow and red.
