Influences on Seventies jewellery
The fashion of the decade was influenced by the lifestyles of other cultures, which was reflected, for example, in the emergence of exotic patterns, colourful scarves with fringes and caftans. This interest in the different also meant that the taste of the seventies was not characterised by a single trend, but by many different styles and materials that coexisted at the same time.
This view also shaped jewellery fashion, which did not want to commit itself to a specific aesthetic. While some designers returned to traditional designs, others turned to new, fresh colours and shapes.
Characteristics of 70s jewellery
In contrast to the jewellery of the Sixties, with its angular, fragmented silhouettes, 10 years later the emphasis was on opulently rounded designs that stood out with their polished surfaces. Sparkling diamonds were also often set in contrast with opaque semi-precious stones to play with contrasts and create interesting effects.
The preference for bold colours was carried over from the 1960s and was reflected in the use of coral, turquoise and malachite.
Statements in everyday life
Jewellery from the 1970s can certainly be seen as a statement. Designers and jewellery manufacturers discovered the rebellious youth as a strong new target group and were only too happy to cater to their preference for large jewellery. Long necklaces were very popular, as were large pendants and opulent earrings. Lush link bracelets or bundles of narrow bangles in gold or silver were also part of the everyday wardrobe.
Indian culture, with its large and elaborately designed necklaces and earrings, which were decorated with colourful enamel work and a multitude of colourful gemstones with great craftsmanship, served as the inspiration and model for this.
Vintage necklaces and bracelets from the 70s
Necklaces were often worn long in the 70s and was particularly popular in the form of chains with large gold or silver links. These pieces of jewellery looked particularly good over a tight turtleneck jumper and were often worn by men too. Several necklaces set with brightly coloured stones were combined with each other and were the perfect accessory for short mini dresses or deep V-necklines.
Bracelets were an absolute must-have in the seventies. Models made from precious metals were often combined with gemstone bracelets so that each wrist was adorned with several pieces of jewellery. Geometric circular segments in expressive designs and large, tactile links together with bright colours characterised the jewellery of the time.
Tank bracelets were also fashionable for both men and women. Those who could afford it favoured wide gold bracelets in various patterns.
