What does Art Deco mean?

The formal language of Art Deco between 1920 and 1940 is reflected in all aspects of art and culture, fashion and jewellery, architecture and furnishings of all kinds. The term is derived from the French term Arts Décoratifs (decorative arts) and was named after the Paris exhibition "Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels modernes" in 1925.

The era of Art Deco

The term Art Deco was first coined in the second half of the 20th century. In the Art Deco era, people celebrated life, pleasure and the new possibilities that had arisen from the technically innovative age after the turn of the century. Global trade led to the influences of different cultures reaching Europe. The newly revived, pronounced interest in international inspirations found its expression particularly in Art Deco jewellery, with inspirations from countries such as Egypt, India, China and Japan. The formal language of Art Deco is characterised by the influence of mechanisation, mechanisation and the use of completely new materials. The artists were also inspired by other modernist movements such as Bauhaus.

Art Nouveau vs. Art Deco

Following on from Art Nouveau, Art Deco continued to use some floral forms, but also utilised the stricter geometric elements of other styles, such as Functionalism.

Stylistic features of Art Deco

In the Art Deco era, fashion and jewellery enter into a close symbiosis, which is expressed in the jewellery and fashion collections of the time. From ca. 1930, the new pragmatism was also reflected in the jewellery design of the time. Other sources of inspiration for the jewellery of the 1930s were the most diverse contemporary art movements, making the art of Art Deco particularly multifaceted. Art Deco existed at the same time as other art movements such as Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism and Futurism.

Art Deco jewellery: characteristics and special features

Art Deco Schmuck

The formal language of Art Deco is dominated by geometric elements and lines, black and white contrasts, often in combination with bright colours, and an often tectonic composition. Jewellery in particular dominates the range, but costume jewellery with a high-quality finish is also becoming increasingly popular. It was unthinkable that the modern woman - sometimes "Garçonne", sometimes "Femme fatale" - could be seen without jewellery. Typical were above all long necklaces and sautoirs, often made of pearls, but also eye-catching ear jewellery, which corresponded particularly well with the fashionable short haircuts. Brooches were not only found on lapels, but also on gloves, hats and headscarves.

Geometric shapes and bold colour choices

The love of geometric outlines, for which Bauhaus and Art Deco jewellery is known, was expressed in the various circle, triangle and square shapes. This resulted in unique Art Deco jewels, unrivalled in finesse and perfection.

White has been one of the fashionable colours since the turn of the century, perfectly implemented with diamond-set platinum or white gold jewellery. In late Art Deco, warm, shiny shades of red and yellow gold also became fashionable.
