Jahrhundertwende & Jugendstilschmuck

(from 1890 to 1910)

Art Nouveau, which developed at the end of the 19th century, introduced a new, original design language to Europe. An overview of the Art Nouveau era

Jugendstil Schmuck

Art Nouveau was a deliberate departure from historical styles. It gave rise to completely new, previously unseen forms inspired by geometry and nature. According to the ideals of Art Nouveau, the whole of life was to be designed as a total work of art, from architecture to clothing and jewellery. You can recognise antique Art Nouveau jewellery by various characteristic features such as the precious materials gold, gemstones, pearls and diamonds, and the catchy geometric shapes or delicate floral patterns.

The major social upheavals at the turn of the century fundamentally changed everyday life in Europe. Art was also strongly influenced by this new Art Nouveau trend. One aim of Art Nouveau artists was to integrate art into everyday life. The boundaries between art and craft were therefore to become blurred. This is why the Art Nouveau movement found expression everywhere, from architecture and furniture design to painting, sculpture, jewellery and glassware. Art Nouveau has various characteristic features that make it instantly recognisable.

What distinguishes Art Nouveau jewellery?

In Art Nouveau jewellery, the focus is clearly on the artistic design and the original ornaments of the various jewels, while the materials used tend to recede into the background. More and more base materials such as horn, mother-of-pearl or enamel are being used.

The special ornamentation of Art Nouveau jewellery is always a real highlight: in addition to natural motifs such as flowers, blossoms or insects, faces and heads with long, flowing hair or naked female bodies are also often depicted. Frequently recurring patterns are spirals or wavy lines.

A striking feature is the flowing lines in combination with floral decorations or geometric shapes. Many designs are created by imitating nature and animals such as dragonflies or cranes are often used as symbols. Art Nouveau art is always unique
