Art Déco Engagement Rings

A brief history of engagement rings

The ring has always been regarded as a symbol of eternity and is still worn today not only for purely decorative purposes, but can also be a sign of an internal connection.

Historically, the engagement ring is said to go back to Pope Stephen I., who wanted to emphasise the promise and commitment of marriage. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, iron engagement rings became established, which were given to the bride-to-be as proof of the receipt of the dowry.

In the 15th century, Maximilian I. of Habsburg presented a diamond engagement ring for the first time.

The deeper meaning of the ring makes it ideal as a gift. An antique model has a particular advantage in this context, as it is as individualised and unique as its wearer.

From the 1920s onwards, the Art Déco period produced beautiful models - preferably in platinum and white gold - that have lost none of their preciousness to this day. The classic Art Déco engagement ring is characterised by clear designs and geometric lines. In combination with diamonds and high-quality coloured stones such as emerald and sapphire, jewellery pieces of timeless elegance and classic luxury were created.

The typical Art Déco design

An Art Déco engagement ring stands in clear contrast to the models on the current market. While the diamond solitaire has almost become synonymous with engagement rings, Art Déco engagement rings rely on opulent diamond setting, in oval, polygonal or even shield-shaped ring shapes. Diamonds in different sizes and cuts are framed by delicate millegrain decor, which emphasise the finesse of the craftsmanship of the time. High-quality coloured stones add charming accents and create sophisticated contrasts to the fine brilliance of the diamonds.
