Description
Antique and exceptional gems brooch made of silver (tested and guaranteed) with the finely cut representation of a putto with lions. A winged putto playing lyre rides over rocky ground on a lion. Here the representation (the icon) of an emblem is shown with the lemma (a kind of rule of life or motto) "force of grace kept in check". The lion symbolizes the power and the putto the grace. Emblems conveyed behavioral norms and wisdoms of life in a graphic-literary form. Their heyday was especially the end of the 16th and especially the 17th century. The beautiful shell cameo sits in an elaborately decorated frame of cords, garlands and leaves. The lower end is formed by three freely movable arrow-shaped suspensions. At the back the brooch has a simple needling with C-hook.
The brooch was made around 1860 in France and shows a rarely depicted motif of the art of gemmes. A collector's item for jewellery connoisseurs and art lovers.
Dimensions of the brooch incl. suspensions: 6.4 x 5.9 cm.
Dimensions of the cameo: approx. 3.7 x 3 cm.
Weight: 15.0 grams.
