Opal

In contrast to other gemstones, opal is not only characterised by its colour and the sparkle created by the cut, but also by the stunning play of light inherent in the stone itself. Its dazzling play of colours and the glow that seems to emanate from it is what makes opal jewellery so unique and sought-after. Find out more »

Opal and its history

Opalkette liegt über dunklem Stein

The history of opal dates back to ancient Rome, where the gemstone was referred to as „opalus“ and was said to have beneficial properties. It was also said to serve as a bringer of luck and was often worn as an amulet. The mineral also plays an important role in the culture of the Aborigines in Australia, one of the largest sources of opals, as it is seen as a symbol of creation and a connection to nature.

Opal and its properties

The best-known varieties of the gemstone are white and black opal as well as boulder opal. Its special features lie in its unique chemical structure, which has not been observed in any other mineral to date.

Opal consists of tiny, closely spaced cristobalite beads that are embedded in silica gel, the building material of opal. This structure enables the fascinating play of colours (opalescence) on an otherwise milky-pale background: the incident light hits the beads, is diffracted and reflected and thus leads to the classic light effects in blue and green, but also yellow and red.

Opals in jewellery

Opal jewellery has been made for centuries and is present in every era, albeit in varying degrees of demand. For example, opal jewellery is often found in Biedermeier, turn-of-the-century, Art Nouveau and mid-century jewellery pieces.

With opal in antique jewellery and modern jewellery alike, it is essential to pay attention to the sensitivity of the stone. If you buy opal jewellery, you should always bear in mind that the mineral is relatively soft compared to other gemstones and can be scratched and damaged more easily. It is therefore important to treat opal jewellery with care and protect it from extreme temperatures and chemicals.

However, it is a popular setting stone for opal earrings or opal necklaces, as it adds a distinctive and almost artistic touch to any piece of jewellery.

Opals for engagement

Engagement rings are often not only chosen for their design, more and more people are also longing for a piece of jewellery with deeper meaning.

Every gemstone is associated with a certain symbolism. Opal is no exception: it is said to symbolise hope, love, loyalty, purity and truth. Engagement rings with opal are therefore a wonderful way to give your loved one a gift with emotional value.
