Description
Particularly beautiful mourning ring from England, crafted from 750 / 18ct yellow gold (tested and guaranteed).
The wide polished ring band widens towards the ring head, which has an oval overlay. The ring features a finely enameled image of an amphora with the following inscription: "Ann Binfield ob(iit) 28 Feb 1798 ae(tatis suae) 88". Ann Binfield died on February 28, 1798 at the age of 88, whereupon her surviving relatives had this ring made to commemorate her even after her death.
18th century mourning jewelry often drew on the imagery of antiquity, which is why amphorae, urns and columns were among the characteristic motifs of the time.
This excellently preserved ring was created in England in 1798 and exemplifies a culture of mourning that was already widespread in Great Britain in previous centuries.
