A time of profound changes

The first half of the 20th century was characterised above all by the political and socio-historical events of the end of imperialism and the two world wars. While the period before the First World War was still very similar to the conditions at the end of the 19th century, the First World War, which turned out to be a cruel material battle, caused a significant turning point.
After the end of the war, new democracies emerged in many European countries with the introduction of universal suffrage. The profound upheavals were only replaced by the Golden Twenties that accompanied the economic upturn, a heyday of art, science and, above all, entertainment culture.
Triggered by the economic crisis of 1929, however, this exuberant mood came to an end and led to renewed social tensions, which resulted in political radicalisation and led to the Second World War.

Jewellery between tradition and modernity

The jewellery of the first half of the 20th century is sometimes still committed to conventional trends and more traditional ideas on the one hand, while on the other it often takes up new modern formal languages and creates interesting designs. In the 1920s and 1930s in particular, wonderful pieces of jewellery were often created that reflected the spirit of optimism of those decades in jewellery design.
