From brooch to brooch

The so-called fibula has been used as a garment pin since the Bronze Age to gather and fasten clothing. In ancient times, they were used as decorative pins to fasten clothing, but also as status symbols. For centuries, brooches have been both functional and decorative.

In the Middle Ages, brooches were worn by the nobility and clergy to emphasise their social status: wealth and power were expressed in the form of precious metals, diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

Brooches and pins became fashionable accessories in the 16th and 17th centuries, including delicate bow motifs that went down in history as Sévigné brooches. Since then, they have established themselves as jewellery items and are no longer necessarily used to fasten clothing. Constantly reinterpreted in line with the design ideals of the times, brooches and pins have developed into accessories that are an expression of individual style.
