Description
Touching sepia brooch with mourning motif, made of gold 585 / 14 Kt (tested and guaranteed). The highly oval brooch, which can also be worn as a pendant through two large movable eyelets, hides behind a concave glass window, enclosed by a frame of black enamel, a high-quality and finely crafted miniature in sepia. At the back the brooch has a simple needling with safety slide. The depiction shows a young man standing at a large urn resting on a high pedestal. With his left hand grimacing in his face, he points with his right to a medallion adorning the high pedestal. "i mourn thy virtues lost" write the letters. Gently inclined down, a Trtauer willow with its hanging branches frames the scenery as a symbol of pain.
The beautiful brooch in the language of forms and motifs of classicism was created as a typical representative of mourning jewellery in England around 1790. So-called Mourning Brooches were of great importance in the 18th century as an expression of personal mourning and objects of remembrance and were particularly widespread in England. This piece is beautifully preserved and an impressive testimony to a jewellery tradition of historical value.
You will receive the brooch lovingly packed in one of our high-quality cases and with a certificate of authenticity.
