Large antique gem brooch with the motif of a bacchante, crafted from yellow gold 585 / 14 ct (tested and guaranteed).
The large oval shell cameo sits in a golden bezel setting, surrounded by an opulently decorated frame. It shows a finely cut, detailed depiction of a bacchante with a leopard skin over her shoulder. This is one of the ladies in the retinue of Bacchus, the god of wine, who are also known as maenads.
A Bacchante is characterised by the following attributes: Panther or leopard skin, vine leaves and vines and a thyrsus staff.
The brooch can be easily and securely fastened using the C-hook on the back.
This elegant piece of jewellery was created around 1870 and is a wonderful example of the reception of antiquity during the period of historicism. It is an exceptional collector's item of outstanding quality.
