Chains and necklaces: eye-catchers for numerous occasions

Drei historische Ketten vor verzierter Tapete

The French word collier means necklace or choker and refers to a chain consisting of several rows of gemstones or pearls. Necklaces have been worn for decorative purposes for thousands of years and remain as popular as ever. At Halsbandaffaire, we offer authentic, historical unique pieces from four centuries, from Rococo, Art Nouveau and Mid-Century to 21st century designs.

Different models are recommended depending on the situation and outfit: gold or silver chains can be worn either close to the neck or long, directly on the skin or over the fabric of the top. This gives you the choice between understated, playful or extravagant looks.

Neck jewellery with coloured stones and diamonds can also make an impressive statement. The brilliance of the most precious of all gemstones has enchanted people for centuries and has led to a quest for ever new shapes and cuts. Unusual neck jewellery set with diamonds is a real eye-catcher, especially with festive attire.

The wide range of coloured gemstones also offers almost limitless combination possibilities for the design of necklaces and colliers. With our versatile range of coloured gemstone jewellery, we are happy to help you find the right model for the right occasion.

Join us on a journey through different eras

At Halsbandaffaire, you will find necklaces made of white gold, silver necklaces.

The 19th century: Biedermeier, historicism and Belle Époque

The Biedermeier period heralded the dawn of the 19th century and produced impressive pieces of jewellery that are still distinguished today by their special craftsmanship. Necklaces and colliers were often made from so-called ‘foam gold’ – thinly rolled gold sheet pressed into shape – and decorated with garnets, coral and turquoise.

In the second half of the 19th century, during the heyday of historicism, stylistic models from past eras served as inspiration. Stylistic elements from classical antiquity, the Gothic and Renaissance periods, and even the Rococo were the focus of attention and were referenced, combined and reinterpreted in the jewellery of historicism. Around 1900, delicate necklaces set with sparkling diamonds came into fashion, which characterised the Belle Époque with their references to the Renaissance. The ‘Garland Style’ was born and delighted its wearers with bow, garland and floral leaf motifs.

The turn of the century and Art Nouveau

At the beginning of the 20th century, Art Nouveau produced an original design language that was no longer oriented towards the past. Necklaces and chains now appeared in imaginative, softly curved designs inspired by nature and its phenomena. Coloured stones such as sapphire, emerald, amethyst and peridot, combined with coloured enamel painting, created wearable works of art that still characterise the distinctive design language of Art Nouveau today.

Art Deco

Art Deco jewellery captivated in the 1920s and 1930s with cool black and white contrasts, which were often accentuated with colourful gemstones such as emeralds, rubies and jade. Strict lines and geometric shapes characterised the designs of this period, giving them a particularly elegant and luxurious appearance. Opulent necklaces set with precious stones were just as much a part of the repertoire as long chains, known as sautoirs.
