Fine micromosaics such as this are artistically composed of numerous tiny glass fragments. Especially during the 19th century, a specialized production of these fragile works of art developed in the historical sites of Italy, especially Rome and Florence. Tourists flocked to the European capitals of culture to study the art and culture of these places on the so-called Grand Tour, which was considered a must in the education of the upper class and the nobility. It became incredibly fashionable to bring souvenirs from these intense journeys. A popular type of souvenir jewellery were micromosaics, which presented themes such as ancient Roman ruins, flowers, birds, animals and pictures of bucolic Italian peasant life. A visit to the Mikromosaikladen became as important as a visit to the famous ruins and museums of Rome itself.
The present brooch with its wonderful micro mosaic of the pantheon also falls into this epoch of 19th century jewellery art and is an exquisite testimony of its time.
